If you’ve ever ordered a cake, you know that one of the first questions you’re asked is, “How many guests do you need to serve?” You respond, and the bakery gives you their recommendation on what size cake would feed your guest count. From there, you might be wondering how that 9” cake is going to feed close to 35 people. Have no fear! We’re here to help.
Cakes are traditionally cut into triangle or “pizza” shaped slices, but when you’re trying to make the most of your cake, you have to get a little creative. We’re sharing step-by-step instructions on how to cut your cake like a pro using tools you already own.
Here’s what you need:
Cake
Serrated Knife
Saucer or Small Plate
One Cup Measuring Cup
Skewer or Toothpick
Rule
Optional:
Pitcher of Hot Water
Dish Towel
Step One: Place the saucer or small plate on top of your cake and trace the outside with your skewer or toothpick.
Step Two: Place the one cup measuring cup inside of the small plate circle and trace with your skewer or toothpick.
Step Three: Take your serrated knife and, vertically, cut around the outside circle. Then, cut around the inside circle. Once you begin cutting vertically, the top layer of cake may rise and fall with the direction of your knife. Don’t panic! Keep your hand softly pressed against the top of the cake for stability.
Pro Tip: Dip your knife into a pitcher of hot water and wipe it off with a dish towel after each time you make an incision for nice clean cuts.
Step Four: Measure your slices on the outside circle with your ruler. You can do this all of the way around the cake or simply eyeball the size of each slice. Next, cut on each side of the ruler. You’ll follow this process for the entire outside ring of the cake.
Step Five: Once the entire outer ring of the cake has been cut and served, follow step four for the inside ring. The inside ring is perfect for guests who may not love icing. Talk about a win-win for everyone!
Step Six: Cut the center of the cake into quarters and serve!
Step Seven: Enjoy your cake :)
Cutting your special event cake doesn’t have to be a challenge! We promise that, with this technique, you’ll both impress your guests and have the perfect portion of cake for everyone!
